Men's Tennis Takes Down Northwood 7-0 to Begin Spring Schedule

The fifth-ranked Warriors sweep the home opener.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (1-0 overall) began the 2023 spring season by shutting out former conference rival Northwood (0-1 overall) by a score of 7-0 on Friday morning inside the new-look Duchene Athletic Facility. The Warriors had to overcome a pair of tiebreakers, but came out on top in both and cruised to the victory.

DOUBLES
The dynamic duo from last season returned this season in doubles play, as sophomore Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and junior Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) played at court No. 1. The match against Northwood's Max Wild and Leon Grundstrom required a tiebreaker, but Drenth and Grey emerged victorious with a 7-6 (2) decision.

Redshirt junior Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and freshman Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) comprised of the duo at No. 2. They cruised to a win, 6-1.

Finally, graduate student Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and junior Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) won at No. 3, 6-2. Kitayama was playing in his first action for WSU after transferring from the United States Air Force Academy in the fall of 2022.

SINGLES
Every Warrior won their match in straight sets to begin the new spring schedule.

Drenth claimed victory at No. 1, 7-5, 6-3.

Grey's match at No. 2 needed another tiebreaker in the second set, however he emerged clean with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Grundstrom.

Not to be outdone, WSU kept its winning rolling with Karcz grabbing victory on No. 3, 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 4, Laws defeated the Timberwolves' Amaan Tezabwala by scores of 6-2, 6-4.

Newcomer Kitayama won his first singles match for Wayne State, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5.

Similarly to Kitayama, Kelt was victorious by the same score. He defeated Tony Henrio 6-2, 6-0 and picked up his first win as a Warrior.

FROM COACH MORROW
"Happy to have the first match be underway and pick up a nice win. I'm proud of the guys, they really showed good energy for the first match and were able to clear the rust off. I saw some new combinations in doubles that I liked as well," said head coach Bryan Morrow.

UP NEXT
After playing a second match on Friday afternoon vs. Lawrence Tech, Wayne State will next be tested against a Division I opponent in Toledo on the road. The match is on Thursday, February 9 and is slated to begin at noon.
