Baseball Falls Twice to North Division Rival

The Warriors lost twice on Saturday by scores of 8-4.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (21-16, 13-7 GLIAC) began an important four-game series at GLIAC North Division foe Northwood (19-17, 9-9 GLIAC) on Saturday.  The Warriors saw their six-game winning streak come to an end in game one as NU scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 8-4.  A five-run inning for NU in game two doomed WSU.

GAME ONE at NORTHWOOD (L, 4-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- An error, a sacrifice bunt, a single and a wild pitch put Northwood up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.  Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) tripled home a run in the top of the third inning.  A sacrifice fly later in the third inning from Daniel Peake (Mississauga, Ont.) gave WSU a 2-1 lead. Another Wayne State error tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning.

- Harms continued to be the lineup's go-to bat with a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning to give the Green & Gold a 4-2 advantage.  The Timberwolves answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4.  Northwood took a 5-4 lead with an RBI single through the left side in the bottom of the sixth inning and added three more runs before WSU was able to escape the inning.  WSU went down in order in the top of the seventh inning.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) finished 3-for-4, while Harms drove in three runs with a double and a triple.

ON THE MOUND
- Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) started and allowed two earned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out five.
- Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) (2-1) allowed four earned runs on two hits and three walks in a third of an inning.
- Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) finished the game on the mound with a scoreless 2/3 of an inning.

GAME TWO at NORTHWOOD (L, 4-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Northwood scored first with a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.  However, an outfield assist from Harms in center field cut down a runner at third base to limit additional damage.  WSU tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning with an RBI single from Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City).  The Timberwolves broke the tie with an RBI double to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning.

- NU loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  After a fielder's choice, the T-Wolves scored five runs including a three-run double down the left field line to give NU a 7-1 lead.  Wayne State scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning, including a two-run double from Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central).  An RBI groundout accounted for the other run.

- A sacrifice fly for NU in the bottom of the sixth inning extended the home lead to 8-4, which would be the final score.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Mergener drove in two runs to pace WSU's offensive attack.

ON THE MOUND
- Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) (2-2) pitched four and 1/3 inning and struck out three, walked five and allowed three earned runs on five hits.
- Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) tossed the final three and 2/3 innings.  He walked five and allowed one earned run on three hits.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State and Northwood will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
