Big Second Half Propels Women's Hoops To 77-69 Victory

George and Sherwood each score a career-high.

DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (4-1 Overall, 4-1 GLIAC) played the first of two games against Northwood (3-2 Overall, 3-2 GLIAC) on Friday night and rallied from a 41-24 halftime deficit to win 77-69 at the Matthaei.

FIRST HALF RECAP
The Warriors started off scoring the first four points of the game with Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) scoring on a layup and Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) assisting. Then Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) scored on another layup to make it 4-0. 

WSU's last lead in the first period was one point (11-10), before the Timberwolves started to take over.  The visitors scored the next nine points, before a pair of free throws by Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.).

Northwood led Wayne State 19-13 after 10 minutes. 

Wayne State pulled within six (25-19) with 5:45 remaining in the first half on a layup by Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron).

NU tallied the next seven points, then outscored the Warriors 9-5 over the final four minutes of the first half to lead 41-24 at intermission.

SECOND HALF RECAP
Wayne State started off the third period on a running start with George scoring on a two pointer.  The Warriors proceeded to score 29 points in the third quarter to get within three (56-53), after scoring just 24 points in the first 20 minutes.

George led WSU with 13 points in the third period, while Perez chipped in with eight points and Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich./ Belleville) added six points.

In the fourth period, WSU took a 64-63 lead on a three pointer from George with an assist from Miller.  George's triple ignited a 7-0 Wayne State run, and the Warriors would never trail the rest of the game.
 
WSU outscored Northwood 24-13 in the fourth quarter. 

The Warriors manage to hold on to their eight-point lead and win 77-69 against Northwood.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
George led WSU with a game-high and a career-best 30 points, along with a game-high 12 rebounds.  Sherwood contributed a career-best 16 points, while Perez helped with 10 points.  Miller dished out a team-high five assists.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Makenzie Todd led NU with 13 points, while Kenzie Seeley, Maizie Taylor, and Jayla Strickland all chipped in with 10 points.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State made 44% (28-of-64) of its field goals and 85% (17-of-20) from the foul line.  Northwood shot 39.1% (27-of-69) from the floor and 70% (7-of-10) at the charity stripe.  WSU held a 49-31 edge in rebounding, but the Timberwolves had just seven turnovers compared to 14 for the Warriors giving NU a 17-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Wayne State and Northwood will conclude the weekend series at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Matthaei.
