MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team split a pair of games against Ohio Dominican for the second straight day Sunday (April 17). ODU picked up a 7-2 win in game one before the Timberwolves responded with an 8-4 victory in game two.
Northwood is now 16-16 overall, 6-8 in the Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Ohio Dominican stands at 14-19-1 overall, 2-16 in the GLIAC.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, Ohio Dominican would plate at least one run in four of the next five innings. The Panthers scored one in the second, two in the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth to open up a 7-0 lead. Northwood scored its only two runs of the game on a two-run homer by freshman Nick Palmer (Warren, Mich./Cousino).
ODU finished with a 7-3 advantage in hits for the game. Northwood's defense let them down in the contest, as five Northwood errors led to six of the Panthers seven runs being unearned.
After being held to three hits in the entire first game, the Timberwolves bats came out swinging in game two. Northwood put together six hits in the opening frame of the contest, which allowed them to score four runs. The Timberwolves made it 5-0 with a run in the second, which is where the score stayed until the sixth inning. The Panthers plated a pair in the top of the inning, but Northwood responded with three of their own. ODU got two back in the eighth and got a pair of runners on in the ninth but were unable to get any closer.
Northwood out-hit ODU 12-8 for the game. The Timberwolves drew six walks, compared to four for the Panthers. Both teams ended up with two extra-base hits.
Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Northwood offense. Palmer added two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Kyle Vedrode (Alma, Mich./Muskegon CC) picked up his second win of the season by allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work, striking out three. Larry Wood (Essexville, Mich./Garber) and Shawn Larner (Gladwin, Mich./Alma College) retired the final five batters of the game without allowing a run.
Northwood will host Grand Valley State in a doubleheader Wednesday (April 17). Game one will get under way at 2 p.m.
