Baseball Goes 1-1 At Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team split a pair of games at Saginaw Valley State Saturday afternoon (April 30). The Timberwolves picked up a 7-4 win in game one before the Cardinals earned a 3-2 walk-off victory in game two.

Northwood is now 22-20 overall, 12-12 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Saginaw Valley stands at 17-25 overall, 9-15 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves jumped out to an early lead in game one, plating three runs in the second inning. NU then extended the lead with two runs in the fourth to make the score 5-0. After SVSU scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Northwood responded with two runs in the sixth to get the lead back up to 7-3. The Cardinals got one back in the seventh and final inning but got no closer.

Northwood out-hit SVSU 10-6 in the game. Both teams drew four walks in the contest.

Cody Kuzniczci (Madeira, Ohio/Northern Kentucky) led Northwood way for Northwood in the game, going 3-5 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Connor Foley (Bay City, Mich./Western/SVSU) went 2-4 with two RBIs. Brogan Fischer (Godfrey, Ill./Illinois Central CC) allowed four runs in six innings to pick up his third win of the season. Matt Stojkov (Northville, Mich./SVSU) got the final three outs of the game to earn his fourth save of the season.

In game two, Northwood took the lead in the third inning with a run. SVSU tied the game with a single run in the fifth, but the Timberwolves scored a run in top of the seventh to go up 2-1. The score remained that way until the ninth inning. The Cardinals tied the game with one out in the bottom of the inning then won it with two outs to earn the split.

Saginaw Valley State finished with a 9-7 advantage in hits for the game. Northwood drew five walks in the game compared to three for SVSU. NU had numerous chances to score more runs, leaving 12 runners on base.

Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) led the way for Northwood in the game, going 2-4 with two RBIs. Alex Lewandowski (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) got a no-decision despite pitching well. He allowed one run on four hits in seven innings of work while striking out three.

Northwood and SVSU will finish their weekend series with a doubleheader Sunday (May 1).  First game is set for Noon.
