Football Earns 49-14 Win At Notre Dame (OH)

The Northwood football team improved to 3-0 with a 49-14 victory Saturday night (September 15).

The Timberwolves are now 2-0 in the GLIAC. Notre Dame falls to 1-2 in the GLIAC, 0-2 in the GLIAC.

It marks the first time since 2006 that Northwood has started a season 3-0.

Northwood jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Fabian Jackson (Gainesville, Ga./North Hall) intercepted a pass on the third play from scrimmage, which put NU on the Walsh on the Notre Dame two-yard line. On the next play from scrimmage, Cameron Jackson (Dahlonega, Ga./Lumpkin) found the end zone, putting Northwood up 7-0.

Less than three minutes later, Northwood made the score 14-0. Aaron Shavers (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) capped a 33-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown run.

Early in the second, Notre Dame got a blocked punt return for a touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7. But the Timberwolves controlled the play for the rest of the quarter, thanks to touchdown rushes by Jackson and Shavers. Jackson scored from seven yards to make the score 21-7 before Shavers found the end zone on a 69-yard run. The score remained 28-7 at the break. NU out-gained the Falcons 236-152 in the half, which included a 215-45 advantage on the ground.

Northwood scored two more touchdowns in the third to put the game away. Jordan Jonker (Hudsonville, Mich.) found the end zone from 3-yards out to make the score 35-7. Late in the quarter, freshman Carrington Thompson (Houston, Tex./Lamar) caught his first career TD, a three-yard pass from Shavers to give Northwood a 42-7 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

After a Falcons touchdown early in the fourth, NU capped the scoring at the 10:05 mark. Shavers found Terrance Stocker (Flint, Mich./Grand Blanc) on a 33-yard touchdown pass to make the final 49-14.

For the game, Northwood out-gained Notre Dame 461-271. NU finished with a 334-75 edge in rushing. The Timberwolves held the NCAA Division II leader in rushing Pedro Powell to 64 yards on the ground on 18 carries.

Shavers led the way for Northwood with a strong game on the ground and in the air. He had 120 yards rushing, 127 yards passing and four total touchdowns. Jackson added 98 yards and two TD's, while Jonker finished with 79 yards and a touchdown. Damion Horton ) Ottawa Hills, Mich.) led the defensive effort with six tackles and an interception.

Northwood will travel to Tiffin Saturday (September 22). Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
