Softball Sweeps Lake Superior State

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team swept Lake Superior State in the 2016 GLIAC home-opener on Tuesday afternoon (March 29). NU fought from behind for an 8-7 eight-inning win before downing the Lakers in five innings 9-1.

The Timberwolves improve to 12-10 on the year, 3-3 in the GLIAC. LSSU falls to 4-18 overall, 0-6 in the GLIAC.

In game one, NU fell behind 4-0 going into the bottom of the third. After Riley Ostapowicz (Grand Rapids, Mich. / West Catholic) led off the inning with a single, Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) scored her on a single to right field. In the fourth, LSSU increased the lead 5-1 in the top of the inning. Northwood responded in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs on four hits to left field and one to right. Ostapowicz led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple to right center, followed directly with a Lauren Look (Pinconning, Mich. / Pinconning (Cleveland State) homerun to pull ahead 7-6. The Lakers responded with a run in the seventh forcing extra innings. The Timberwolves won on another Gietl RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich.).

NU out-hit Lake Superior State 14-11, while the Lakers left 12 runners on base to eight for Northwood. Look finished with a homerun, two RBI's and two runs scored in the win. Gietl added a pair of RBI's on 3-5 hitting. Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich.) also added two RBI's and a pair of runs scored, while Ostapowicz finished 4-4 and scored three runs.

The Timberwolves plated one run in the first, five in the second, two in the third and another in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead into the fifth inning. NU held the Lakers scoreless in the fifth for a five-inning mercy rule. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich./Dundee) was able to pitch her way out of bases loaded twice without allowing a single run in either inning.

For the game, NU out-hit LSSU 13-5. Look finished with a pair of doubles and RBI's going 3-3. Danielle Bartodziej (Westchester, Ill. / Nazareth Academy) also hit three-for-three with an RBI and run scored. Lynn went 2-4 with a pair of RBI's and run scored, while Brooke Wauters (St. Clare Shores, Mich./Lakeshore) and Laura Walton (Clare, Mich. / Clare) each added two runs scored.

NU is set to host Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (April 2). The doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
