Softball Drops Pair To SVSU

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team dropped a pair of games against Saginaw Valley State on Friday afternoon (April 1). NU fell 8-7 in game one before falling 4-3 in game two.

The Timberwolves are now 12-12 on the year, 3-5 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley State is 18-8 overall, 4-4 in the GLIAC.

To start game one, the Cardinals plated seven runs in the first two innings on three homeruns. The Timberwolves responded with a pair in the third before a Jessica Tostrud (Kenosha, Wisc./Mary D. Bradford) grand slam in the fourth to close the gap 7-6. SVSU scored another in the sixth for an 8-6 lead. NU loaded the bases in the seventh but only was able to score one to fall 8-7.

Northwood out-hit the Cardinals 12-8 and committed two errors, to just one for Saginaw Valley State. Tostrud finished 4-4 with a pair of runs scored and four RBI's, including a grand slam. Ashley Lynn (Garden City, Mich.) finished 2-5 and added two runs scored.

NU led off game two with a run on a Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich. / Midland) double before SVSU responded with a pair in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 lead. In the third, NU loaded the bases with zero outs but was only able to plate a single run to trail 3-2. Saginaw Valley State extended the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) led off the fifth with her fourth homerun of the year, cutting the lead 4-3. Neither team scored in the final two innings for a final score of 4-3.

SVSU out-hit NU 10-4 in game two. Gietl finished hitting 3-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Wontorcik added a pair of RBI's.

The Timberwolves are scheduled to host Wayne State on Sunday (April 3). The doubleheader is slated for Noon. Game times and location throughout the season are subject to change. Be sure to check the NU athletics website (www.gonorthwood.com) for all schedule updates.
