Softball Is Swept By Lake Erie

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team dropped a pair of games to Lake Erie on Thursday afternoon (April 21). NU lost fell 5-1 in game one before losing 9-1 in five innings of game two.

The Timberwolves fall to 16-20 on the year, 7-13 in the GLIAC. The Storm are now 16-20 overall, 7-13 in the GLIAC.

In game one, NU scored first on a fielding error with bases loaded. Lake Erie responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs and never looked back. The Storm scored again in the fourth and sixth for a 5-1 win.

Northwood left a total of nine runners on base but were out-hit by LEC 7-3 and committed three errors. Riley Ostapowicz (Grand Rapids, Mich. / West Catholic) finished 2-3 in the loss. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich./Dundee) struck out five batters in the circle and is now 5-10 on the year.

Lake Erie scored first and often in game two, plating runs in every inning except the first. Northwood's only bright spot offensively was a solo homerun by Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich. / Midland) in the fourth.

LEC out-hit NU (13-7). Wontorcik finished with a homerun, while Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) and Marissa Tiano (Warren, Mich. / Regina) each registered a pair of hits in the game.

The Timberwolves finish the regular season with three home contests in a row beginning with Tiffin on Friday (April 22) at 2:30 p.m. Northwood will then host Ohio Dominican on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by Ashland on Sunday at Noon.
