MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team loses pair to Ohio Dominican on Saturday afternoon (April 23) for senior day. NU dropped the first contest 2-0 before falling 5-3 in game two.
This was senior day for a pair of Northwood seniors – pitcher Casey Brown (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) and catcher Lauren Look (Pinconning, Mich. / Pinconning (Cleveland State).
The Timberwolves are now 16-24 on the year, 7-17 in the GLIAC. The Panthers stand at 24-26 on the season, 11-13 in the GLIAC.
Game one didn't see much offense, as there were a total of two hits between the two teams through three innings. ODU scored a pair of runs on just as many hits in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. Northwood responded with two hits in the fifth but were unable to plate a run. Neither team scored in the final three innings for a 2-0 loss to the Timberwolves.
NU registered just four hits in 25 at bats and left four runners on base in game one. Vanessa Ewing (Maybee, Mich./Dundee) struck out eight batters and allowed just five hits in the circle. Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich. / Midland) finished 2-for-3 in the loss.
In game two, NU came out strong with a run in the top of the first for an early lead. The Panthers responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair but Northwood answered right back in the top of the second. Meghan Franz (Toledo, Ohio / Whitmer) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Karli Godlewski (Shelby Township, Mich. / Lutheran North) followed with a double to left center. Godlewski then advanced to third on the throw from the center fielder. The ball ended up in the dugout and Godlewski scored on a very unorthodox play to take a 3-2 lead. The score remained that way until Ohio Dominican plated a pair of runs in the fifth for a 5-3 win.
NU out-hit ODU (8-6), while both teams left four runners stranded on base. Franz finished 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Marissa Tiano (Warren, Mich. / Regina) added a pair of hits in the loss.
The Timberwolves closes out the regular season hosting Ashland in a makeup game on Sunday (April 24) at Noon.
