Softball Closes Season With A Pair Of Loses To Ashland

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University softball team closes out the season with a pair of losses against Ashland on Sunday afternoon (April 24). NU fell 4-0 in game one before extending game two into extra innings to succumb to an 8-5 defeat.

The Timberwolves finish the year at 16-26 overall, 7-19 in the GLIAC. The Eagles stand at 25-21-1 on the year, 15-10-1 in the GLIAC.

Northwood wasn't able to generate much offense in game one, only finishing with three hits total. AU finished with four runs on ten hits. Hayley D'Avilar (Georgetown, Ont./Christ the King Catholic Secondary) registered a double as the lone bright spot for the Timberwolves.

In game two, the Eagles plated three in the third but Northwood responded on an Andria Gietl (Plymouth, Mich. / Ladywood) double to score Meghan Franz (Toledo, Ohio / Whitmer). AU plated a pair in the fourth for a 5-1 lead. The Timberwolves responded by loading the bases without a single out but were only able to score one on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Bartodziej (Westchester, Ill. / Nazareth Academy). NU loaded the bases again in the sixth and plated another run, cutting the lead 5-3 going into the seventh. Gietl started the seventh getting on base off an error, followed by D'Avilar hitting a double to left center. Riley Ostapowicz (Grand Rapids, Mich. / West Catholic) then hit Brooke Wauters (St. Clare Shores, Mich./Lakeshore) in on a fielder's choice. Jennifer Wontorcik (Midland, Mich. / Midland) connected on a line drive to center field, scoring D'Avilar and tying the game 5-5. Despite loading the bases for a third time, Northwood was unable to score another run and sent the game into extra innings. Ashland scored three runs on one three NU errors in the eighth to win 8-5.

For the game, AU out-hit the Timberwolves (10-8) and tallied five errors to four for Northwood. Both teams left a significant amount of runners on base, as NU left ten and Ashland left 13 stranded. Ostapowicz, Franz, Gietl and D'Avilar each recorded a double in the final game of the season. Wontorcik finished 2-3 and Ostapowicz added a pair of runs and an RBI in the contest.
