Women's Basketball Claims 74-71 Road Win Over Lake Superior State

SCORE: Northwood Timberwolves 74, Lake Superior State Lakers 71

RECAP: Northwood get a three-pointer from Maddy Seeley in the final seconds to pick up a 74-71 at Lake Superior State Monday night (January 30).

FIRST QUARTER

  • The opening quarter was close throughout – the biggest lead for either team was three points in the opening 10 minutes.
  • Northwood eventually took a 17-16 lead after one quarter.
  • Northwood earned the lead thanks to the offensive glass. NU shot just 35.3 percent from the floor (6-17) compared to LSSU at 53.8 percent (7-13). But Northwood grabbed eight offensive rebounds which led to six second-chance points.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Northwood got off to a good start in the second quarter, eventually leading 30-20 with less than three minutes remaining in the half.
  • The Lakers responded with a big push to finish, scoring 11 of the final 14 points to cut the Northwood lead down to 33-31 at the break.
  • LSSU shot better than Northwood for second straight quarter – LS finished at 45.5 percent (5-11) compared to NU at 33.3 percent (4-12). Once again, NU used second chance points to earn the edge - Northwood out-scored LSSU 8-2 in the quarter

THIRD QUARTER

  • Northwood was the better team in the third quarter, out-scoring the Lakers 19-11 in the frame.
  • The Timberwolves by as many as 14 in the third before taking a 52-42 edge over LSSU to the fourth.
  • Northwood shot 43.8 percent from the floor (7-16) while holding Lake Superior State to 1-7 (14.3 percent). LSSU did go 9-12 from the foul line in the third to stay within striking distance.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • As was the case throughout the game, both teams made quick runs in the fourth quarter.
  • Northwood led 66-55 with 4:38 remaining, only to see LSSU put up eight straight points to cut the advantage down to 66-63.
  • NU connected on four straight free throws to go back up 70-63 with under two minutes to go, but the Lakers bounced right back. Lake Superior State scored eight points on their final three possessions to tie the score 71-71 with 14 seconds remaining.
  • On the final possession of the game, it was junior Maddy Seeley who came up with the biggest shot of the night. Her 3-pointer with just over three seconds remaining put NU on top 74-71. A last-second shot at the buzzer was no good, giving Northwood the win.
