Northwood Football All-Decade team (2010-19)

Selections and comments by Travis McCurdy, Northwood Assistant Athletic Director for Communications

Football provided some of the toughest choices for any sport. I did make some slight concessions by position groups to get the best players on the team.

DEFENSIVE END

Charles Williams (2015-17)

  • Two-time All-GLIAC honoree
  • Had 38 tackles for loss in three seasons, including 18.5 in his senior year
  • Also added 17.5 sacks in career
  • Playing professionally in the Indoor Football League, currently with the Oakland Panthers
Charles was a beast for Northwood in his career. His senior year is one of the best for a defensive lineman in school history.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE

Justin Barnes (2009-12)

  • Honorable Mention All-GLIAC (2012)
  • Had 107 tackles for his career
  • Also had 19.5 tackles for loss in his career
Justin was a local recruit who was a strong performer for the Timberwolves up front.

DEFENSE END

Kyle Fikki (2011-13)

  • Three-Time All-GLIAC honoree
  • Had 25.5 tackles for loss in three seasons
  • Totalled 15 sacks and 87 tackles in career
Kyle was a consistent performer on the end for Northwood. From start to finish in his career, Kyle made plays for the NU defense.

LINEBACKER

Michael Fisher (2013-16)

  • Named All-GLIAC three times, including First Team All-Conference twice
  • Stands second in school history with 430 career tackles
  • Led the GLIAC in tackles three times
  • Earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors as a junior and a senior
Northwood had a ton of great linebackers in this decade, but Mike stands out above everyone else. He was tough, smart and just made play after play. On the short list of greatest defensive players in school history.

LINEBACKER

Mike Keith (2012-15)

  • Earned All-GLIAC honors three times
  • Had 299 tackles in his final three seasons at Northwood
  • Also had 18 tackles for loss and seven pass breakups
Mike sometimes fell a bit under the radar because of the other linebacker at Northwood at the time named Mike (Fisher). He was an outstanding all-around player who made plays all over the field for Northwood.

LINEBACKER

Spencer Remtema (2008-12)

  • Named All-GLIAC twice in his career
  • Ended career with 247 tackles
  • Averaged over seven tackles per game in his final three years at Northwood
  • Also had 16.5 tackles for loss, four fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles, six pass breakups and three interceptions in his career
Spencer started a tremendous decade of linebackers. He was a playmaker who was also a great leader.

LINEBACKER

Ryan Whittum (2009-12)

  • Two-time All-GLIAC honoree
  • Had 183 tackles in his final two seasons at Northwood
  • Totalled 21.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries
I will admit: Northwood has never ran a 3-4 defense this decade. But with this group of player, I went with four linebackers. Ryan was probably the most athletic of the group who really flew around the field.

DEFENSIVE BACK

Dimitri Abro (2016-19)

  • Named First Team All-GLIAC in 2019
  • Also earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC in 2018
  • Led the GLIAC in tackles in 2019
  • His 128 tackles in 2019 are the second-most in school history
Dim is a great story - going from a walk-on to one of the best player in the GLIAC. He carried the load for the Northwood defense in 2019. He's a great representative of NU football.

DEFENSIVE BACK

Ayrn Curtis (2014-16)

  • Named All-GLIAC twice in his career
  • Had 63 tackles, six interceptions and 13 pass breakups in 2014
  • His six interceptions are the most for any player in a season this decade
Ayrn's 2014 season is the best for a cornerback at Northwood his decade. His numbers went down after that, which is very common for top corners as teams avoid throwing their way.

DEFENSIVE BACK

Fabian Jackson (2008-11)

  • First Team All-GLIAC (2012)
  • Honorable Mention All-GLIAC (2011)
  • Had 152 tackles in his career
  • Finished career with five interceptions and 16 pass breakups
Fabian was tough and smart at safety for Northwood. He always seemed to be in the right place and made plays all over the field.

DEFENSIVE BACK

Nick Tripp (2013-17)

  • First Team All-GLIAC (2017)
  • Second Team All-GLIAC (2016)
  • Had 211 tackles in his career
  • Ended career with five interceptions, 16 pass breakups and 10.5 tackles for loss
Nick was the most physical safety in the decade for Northwood. But is also was really good in pass coverage. A guy who could make plays wherever it was needed.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Matt Broome (2009-12)

  • Named All-GLIAC in both 2011 and 2012
  • Three-year starter for Northwood
  • Appeared in 38 career games for the Timberwolves
Offensive line is a spot I just picked the five best players I could regardless of position. All five of these guys earned All-GLIAC recognition, which was my main consideration.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Chris Jacobs (2016-18)

  • Two-time All-GLIAC honoree
  • Three-year starter up front for Northwood
  • Played in 31 games as a Timberwolf

OFFENSIVE LINE

Jeremy Marshall (2015-17)

  • Named Second Team All-GLIAC in 2017
  • Earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC in 2016
  • Made 20 starts in two season at Northwood

OFFENSIVE LINE

Brad Oxnevad (2012-15)

  • Four-year starter up front for Northwood
  • Earned Second Team All-GLIAC in 2015
  • Honorable Mention All-GLIAC in 2013 & 2014
  • Only three-time All-GLIAC honoree among NU offensive lineman in the 2010s
  • Made 42 career starts for Northwood

OFFENSIVE LINE

Damon Sutton (2017-19)

  • Second Team All-GLIAC in 2018
  • Honorable Mention All-GLIAC in 2019
  • Has made 25 starts up front the last three seasons

WIDE RECEIVER

Gary Landless (2015-18)

  • Named Second Team All-GLIAC in 2018
  • Led Division II in yards per reception in 2018 (26.9)
  • Ended senior year with 565 yards receiving on 21 catches
Gary's senior year was very memorable, as he became a tremendous deep threat. Didn't need the throw to be perfect to be able to go make a play.

WIDE RECEIVER

Quillan Mathis (2007-11)

  • Honorable Mention All-GLIAC in 2010
  • Had 655 yards receiving and eight touchdowns in 2010
  • Finished career with 25 touchdown receptions
Q's best season was his freshman campaign, which happened in 2007. But he still was very productive throughout his career, which included a pair of seasons this decade. He was the best I have seen at Northwood in making tough catches with defenders around him.

WIDE RECEIVER

Theron Wilson (2013-16)

  • Named All-GLIAC twice in his career
  • Had 1,566 yards receiving for his career, the most for any player this decade
  • Finished career with 13 touchdown receptions while averaging 20.6 yards per catch
Theron was probably the best athlete I have seen at wide receiver in my 16 years at Northwood. He was fast, smooth and an excellent jumper. Made a ton of big plays for Northwood.

RUNNING BACK

Cameron Jackson (2010-13)

  • Named Second Team All-GLIAC in 2012
  • Became the first player in 22 years to reach 1,000 yards rushing in a season in 2011 (1,078)
  • Ended career with 19 touchdowns
Cam had one of the best seasons for a running back in school history in 2011. Unfortunately, he battled injuries the rest of his career. He was a tough, physical runner. Cam joins his cousin Fabian on this all-decade team.

RUNNING BACK

Jared Bruguglio (2012-15)

  • Honorable Mention All-GLIAC (2014)
  • Had 908 yards rushing in 2014, the second-most for a running back this decade
  • Totalled 13 touchdowns the final two years of his career
Jared spent his career bouncing back and forth from linebacker to running back. Once he took over as the feature back his junior year, he was a force. Jared was really good running physically between the tackles while also being able to bust open big plays.

QUARTERBACK

Aaron Shavers (2010-12)

  • Honorable Mention All-GLIAC (2010)
  • Passed for 2,610 yards and 26 touchdowns in his career
  • Rushed for 1,456 yards and 14 touchdowns
  • Had 959 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns in 2010
Before injuries slowed him down, Aaron was the perfect quarterback for the Northwood offense. He was explosive in the running game and had a huge arm. As talented an all-around QB as I have seen at Northwood.

RETURNER

Vashon Nutt (2014-17)

  • First Team All-GLIAC as a returner in 2017
  • Ranked third nationally in kick returns in 2017, averaging 32.0 per return
  • Top return man on team that led Division II in kickoff returns in 2017
  • Had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in 2016
The 2017 was incredible on kick returns. And Vashon was the leader of that group. They made life a ton easier for the NU offense that season.

KICKER

Keegan Haggarty (2013-16)

  • Honorable Mention All-GLIAC (2014)
  • Went 25-34 on field goals in his career
  • Connected on 96 percent of his extra points (73-76)
Pat Sijan was also a strong candidate for this spot, but most of his career took place in the 2000's. Keegan was extremely accurate and reliable in his time at Northwood.

PUNTER

Tony Hite (2009-12)

  • Two-time All-GLIAC honoree
  • Averaged 39.6 yards per punt for his career
  • Placed 49 punts inside the 20
Tony came in as one of the most heralded punters and lived up to the billing. He always had a powerful leg but grew into a great punter. Tony forced five fair catches in his first two years and 29 in his final two seasons.
