CHARLESTON HUGHES

Football

2003-06

Charleston Hughes stands as one of the top linebackers in Northwood football history. A two-time All-American, Hughes earned All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors four times in his career. He led Division II in solo tackles in 2006, finishing the season with 81. Northwood won the GLIAC Championship in 2004 and earned three consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament in his final three seasons as a Timberwolf. Hughes went on to a highly successful career in the Canadian Football league, where he played from 2008-22. Making the move from linebacker at Northwood to defensive end in the CFL, Hughes led the league in sacks four times and was a six-time CFL All-Star. He finished his career with 136 sacks, good for fifth in CFL history.

TYLER JANDRON

Baseball

2017-18

Tyler Jandron was the top performer on the Northwood University baseball teams that changed the course of the program. In two seasons on the mound for Northwood, Jandron posted a 21-4 record with a 2.41 ERA. He struck out 194 batters in just 172 innings. Jandron was the first pitcher in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history to earn Pitcher of the Year honors in two straight seasons. He was also named the Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year in each of his two seasons as a Timberwolf. Northwood took home the first two conference championships and earned its first two trips to the NCAA Tournament during his time in Midland.

HENRY RUSSELL

Track & Field

1990-93

Henry Russell is one of the top men's track & field athletes in Northwood University history. Russell took home the national championship during the indoor season, earning the title at the 1993 NAIA Indoor Championship in the long jump. He also earned All-America honors at the 1992 NAIA Indoor Championships as well at the 1993 NAIA Outdoor Championships. Russell still stands second in the Northwood record book in the indoor long jump (7.5 meters) and fourth in the outdoor long jump (7.44 meters). He was also a four-year member of the Northwood University football team, rushing for 583 yards and three touchdowns as a senior.

RON SCHUENEMAN

Football

1980-83

Ron Schueneman was a standout in the greatest defensive backfield in Northwood University football history. He earned First Team All-America honors in 1983, thanks to leading all of NAIA in interceptions with 11. That interception total was a school record, a mark that still stands in 2024. Schueneman also holds the school record for interceptions in a career with 22. He is the third member of the defensive backfield from the 1980-82 teams to be inducted in the Northwood Athletic Hall of Fame, joining Jon Mack (Class of 2009) and Ronnie McCoy (Class of 2016).

ALYSSA (TOMASSI) RHODES

Soccer

2010-13

Alyssa Tomassi was one of the top offensive performers in Northwood women's soccer history. She ranks fifth in school history in both goals (30) and points (68). Tomassi set the school-record for goals in a game against Malone in 2012 when she scored five in an 11-0 victory over the Pioneers. Tomassi earned 10 points in a game twice in her career. Only one other player in school history has had 10 points in a game. Tomassi earned All-Conference honors twice in her career and All-Region honors in 2012. She teamed with fellow Northwood Hall of Famer Amanda Watson (Class of 2017) to form the greatest forward combination in school history.

2005 SOFTBALL TEAM

The 2005 Softball team registered one of the greatest turnarounds in Northwood University athletics history. A year after winning 14 games overall and going 3-15 in the GLIAC to place last in the conference, the 2005 team earned 34 wins while going 14-6 in league play to take home the first conference championship in school history. The Timberwolves also made the first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in school history, advancing all the way to the Midwest Regional final before falling to undefeated Northern Kentucky. Northwood Hall of Famer Lisa Shepard (Class of 2014) was a dominant force in the circle for the Timberwolves. Heather Bruder was the second coach in school history to earn GLIAC Coach of the Year, while Julie Olson became the first Timberwolf to earn GLIAC Freshman of the Year honors.
