The Northwood University baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games to Grand Valley State Wednesday afternoon (May 1). GVSU earned a 3-2 win in game one before posting a 4-3 win in game two.
The doubleheader was the final home games of the season for the Timberwolves. Grand Valley State improves to 26-13 overall, 20-6 in the GLIAC. Northwood falls to 16-23 overall, 11-16 in the GLIAC.
Northwood got on the board in game one in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Jason Fracassa (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) which plated Jake Oard (Beaverton, Mich.), who led the game off with a double. GVSU tied the game in the third inning, but Northwood responded in the fourth on a RBI single by Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./H.S. Truman). NU maintained their 2-1 lead until the sixth inning when Grand Valley State tied the game. The Lakers then earned the win thanks to another run in the seventh. The Timberwolves had a runner at second base with one out in three separate innings in the contest and did not score. Oard led the Northwood offense with two hits and an RBI. Jordan Snider (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) allowed one run in 4 2/3 innings of work in the final home start of his career.
Game two proved to be very similar to the opener. Northwood opened the game with two runs in the first inning thanks to four consecutive two out singles. Eric Altman (West Bloomfield, Mich./St. Clair) and Fracassa had the final two hits of the inning to put the Timberwolves up 2-0 after one inning. Northwood made the score 3-1 in the fourth inning thanks to a one-out single by Oard. Once again, it was in the sixth inning that Grand Valley State made its comeback. The Lakers plated three runs on three hits in the inning to go on top for the first time in the game 4-3. Northwood would not get a base runner in the final two innings. Six different Timberwolves had hits in the game. Jake Winicki (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) took the loss despite allowing two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Northwood will travel to Lake Erie this weekend for a key GLIAC series to finish the season. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
