Baseball Finishes Florida Trip With 13-6 Win Over Upper Iowa

The Northwood University baseball team finished its spring trip to Florida with a 13-6 win over Upper Iowa Friday afternoon (March 14).

Both teams now stand at 7-6 on the season.

Northwood got off to a good start in the game, plating a pair of runs in the first. The Timberwolves eventually led 4-0 in the fourth, but Upper Iowa plated three runs in the third to cut the lead to 4-3. Both teams scored a run in the fifth before Northwood broke the game open one inning later. Northwood plated five in the sixth and three more in the seventh to make the score. Upper Iowa plated a pair in the ninth to round out the scoring.

The Timberwolves finished the game with a 14-10 advantage in hits. Both teams drew six walks.  Northwood continued to be aggressive on the base paths, registering three more stolen bases. For the season, NU has totaled 32 stolen bases to 18 for their opponents.

Zyke Bailey (/HS Truman) led the Northwood offense with a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season, and four RBIs. Larsen Cronkright (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) had two hits and three RBIs, while Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had two hits, two walks, three runs scored and two RBIs. Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) reached base four times (two hits, two walks) and score three times, while Eric Altman (West Bloomfield, Mich./St. Clair CC) had a pair of hits and two runs scored.

Alex Lewandowski (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) picked up his second win of the year, allowing two hits in two scoreless innings of relief. Northwood's bullpen allowed no earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Northwood is scheduled to open up GLIAC play at Saginaw Valley State Wednesday afternoon (March 19). The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
