Baseball Opens Season With Sweep Over Montreat

MOORESVILLE, N.C. - The Northwood University baseball team opened their 2015 season with a doubleheader sweep over Montreat Wednesday afternoon (March 4). NU picked up a 17-7 win in game one before earning a 6-4 victory in game two.

The wins are the first at Northwood for new Timberwolves head coach Jordan Bischel. Montreat stands at 3-10 on the season.

In game one, the Timberwolves fell behind 1-0 heading into the second inning when Northwood took control. NU scored one in the second, two in the third and then 10 in the fourth to open up a 13-1 lead. Montreat plated six runs of their own in the fourth, but NU scored the final four runs over the last three innings to earn the win. Northwood out-hit Montreat 15-12 for the game.  Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) went 5-5 in the game with a double, a triple, three runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Tanner McCarn (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC) went 2-5 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and three RBIs., while Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./H.S. Truman) went 2-4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Northwood took control of game two in the first inning, scoring three runs.  The big hit of the inning was a two-run single by Dylan Trimarchi (Pasadena, Calif./Glendale CC). NU then made it 4-0 in the second on a McCarn sacrifice fly. Montreat plated three runs in the third, but RBIs by Lee and Nate Boschma (Hudsonville, Mich.) in the fifth and the seventh extended the lead back to 6-3. The Cavaliers plated a single run in the seventh but got no closer. Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.) and Trimarchi each had two hits in the game.

Northwood will take on Missouri-St. Louis in a single game Friday (March 6). Game time is set for 11 a.m. in Coco Beach, Florida.
