Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader At Findlay

FINDLAY, OHIO – The Northwood University baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over Findlay Monday afternoon (March 30). Northwood claimed a 7-2 win in game one before taking game two 12-4.

Northwood, which took three of four in the series, improves to 11-12 overall, 5-3 in the GLIAC. Findlay falls to 6-17 overall, 1-7 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves took the lead early in game one, scoring three runs in the second and one in the third to go up 4-0. Findlay got a run back in the fifth, but Northwood responded with three runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Both teams finished the game with seven hits. Northwood drew five more walks in the game (7-2) and Findlay committed two errors compared to zero for NU.

Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) went 2-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Mich./Macomb CC) had a double and two RBIs. Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./HS Truman) and Ben Balgaard (Fenton, Mich./Howell) all had RBIs for the Timberwolves.  Alex Lewandowski (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) picked up the win for the Timberwolves, tossing a complete game to improve to 3-2 on the year. He had eight strikeouts while allowing seven hits and two earned runs.

Northwood took control of game two in the first inning, scoring five runs. The Timberwolves added a pair of runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to go up 8-1. Findlay scored a pair in the seventh, only to see NU respond with four in the eighth.  The Oilers rounded out the scoring with a run in the eighth.

The Timberwolves finished the game with a 14-10 advantage in hits. Northwood drew six walks to three for Findlay. NU overcame four errors defensively to earn the win.

Pulver and Grant Bridgewater (Bay City, Mich./Western) each finished the game with three hits and a pair of runs scored. Wayne Moak (Marysville, Mich.) had two hits and three RBIs, while Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.) had two hits, a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Nate Boschma (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Zyvon both added two RBIs. Sean Cunningham (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.

Northwood will travel to Rochester for a single game Wednesday (April 1). First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
