Baseball Posts Second Straight Sweep Over Walsh

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team continued its strong play with a doubleheader sweep versus Walsh Sunday afternoon (April 12). The Timberwolves won game one 2-0 before earning a 7-2 win in game two.

Northwood has now won 12 of 13 to stand at 21-13 overall, 14-4 in the GLIAC. NU owns a three game lead in the GLIAC North Division and has the best record overall in the GLIAC.

Walsh falls to 15-17 overall, 8-10 in the GLIAC.

Game one was scoreless until the third inning when Tanner McCarn (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC) got the Timberwolves on the board. His RBI double scored Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) to give Northwood the lead. NU then got an unearned run in the fifth to round out the scoring.

Northwood had five hits compared to four for Walsh. NU drew four more walks than the Cavaliers (5-1).

The star of the game for Northwood was junior pitcher Logan Meadors (Oxnard, Calif. /Midland Univ.). He tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits while striking out three. It was Meadors' second straight complete-game win for Northwood, improving his overall record to 4-2 on the season.

The Timberwolves got off to a good start in game two, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. Walsh eventually tied the gamer in the fourth inning, but NU responded with a run in the sixth. Northwood then scored three in the sixth and one in the eighth to claim the win.

Both teams finished game two with nine hits, but it was Northwood's patient approach at the plate that proved key once again. The Timberwolves drew nine walks in the game compared to just one for the Cavaliers. On the season, NU has now drawn 104 more walks than their opponents (191-87).

Wayne Moak (Marysville, Mich.) went 2-2 with a home run, two runs scored, two walks and an RBI. The homer was the first in Moak's career. Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.) drove in three runs, while Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Alex Lewandowski (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) picked up his sixth win of the season thanks to a complete game effort. He allowed one earned run on nine hits while striking out four.

Northwood will host Grand Valley State Wednesday afternoon (April 15) for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
