Baseball Drops Pair To Grand Valley State

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Grand Valley State Wednesday afternoon (April 15). The Lakers won game one 12-9 before earning a 20-5 win in game two.

Northwood is now 21-15 overall, 14-6 in the GLIAC.  GVSU gets back to within one game in the GLIAC North Division, now standing at 21-12 overall, 13-7 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves got off to a good start in the opener, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning to take an early lead. But GVSU took over at that point, scoring five in the top of the third. The score was 7-2 heading to the seventh and final inning when both teams put together big rallies. The Lakers scored five to make the score 12-2, only to see Northwood score seven runs. The Timberwolves eventually got the tying run on deck but were unable to tie the game.

GVSU out-hit Northwood 12-7 for the game, which included a 6-3 edge in extra base hits for the Lakers.

Tanner McCarn (Olivet, Mich./Kellogg CC) led the Northwood offense in game one, going 3-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Zyke Bailey (Taylor, Mich./HS Truman) ended up 1-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Nick Barrientos (Zionsville, Ind./Danville Area CC) came off the bench for a two-run single.

Game two was all GVSU from the start, as the Lakers scored four in the first inning. Grand Valley State added three runs in the third, six in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the seventh. Northwood's runs came in the fourth (two) and the seventh (three).

The Lakers ended up with 21 hits in game two, while NU had 16. GVSU also walked six times while Northwood committed four errors.

Ben Balgaard (Fenton, Mich./Howell) led the Northwood offense in the game, finishing 4-5 with two runs scored. Eric Cotton (Troy, Mich./Jackson CC) came off the bench to go 2-3 with a home run and an RBI. Daniel Puler (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.), Brian Dombrowski (Troy, Mich./Athens) and Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Mich./Macomb CC) all had two hits for the Timberwolves.

Northwood will travel to Wayne State Saturday (April 18). That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
