Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Wayne State

DETROIT, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team split a doubleheader at Wayne State Sunday afternoon (April 19). Northwood picked up an 8-3 win in game won before dropping a disappointing 4-3 contest in game two.

Northwood is now 22-18 overall, 15-9 in the GLIAC. Wayne State stands at 18-18-1 overall, 12-11-1 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves came out strong in game one, scoring in five of the first six innings of the game. NU plated one in the first, one in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth to open up an 8-0 lead. WSU scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to round out the scoring.

Northwood out-hit Wayne State 10-8 in the game. NU also had three more walks in the contest.

Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) went 2-2 with three runs scored to lead the Northwood offense. Wayne Moak (Marysville, Mich.) had two runs and two RBIs. Luke Bivens (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) improved to 5-1 on the year with a complete game victory. He allowed three runs on eight hits, striking out four.

Northwood got off to the early lead in game two as well, scoring one in the first and two in the third to go up 3-0. The Timberwolves had numerous chances to expand on that lead, putting three different runners in scoring position over the next four innings but were unable to score. WSU then tied the game with three runs in the seventh, two of which came with two outs. NU had a chance to take the lead in the ninth, stranding a runner on third with one out. The Warriors then won the game in the bottom of the inning despite the first two batters of the inning being retired.

Grant Bridgewater (Bay City, Mich./Western) went 3-4 in the game for Northwood. Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had two hits and an RBI. Nick Barrientos (Zionsville, Ind./Danville Area CC) had a hit, two runs and two walks. Sean Cunningham (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) pitched well despite getting a no-decision, allowing one earned run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.

Northwood will host Marygrove Tuesday (April 21). The single nine inning game will begin at 4 p.m.
