Baseball Drops Pair To Saginaw Valley State

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Saginaw Valley State Sunday afternoon (April 26). SVSU earned a 5-0 win in game one before posting a 7-4 win in 15 innings in game two.

SVSU is now 17-18-1 overall, 12-15 in the GLIAC. Northwood stands at 24-20 overall, 17-11 in the GLIAC.

The key to game one game in the opening inning, when SVSU scored an unearned run and followed it up with a two-run homer to go up 3-0. The Cardinals added single runs in the fourth and the seventh to wrap up the win.

Saginaw Valley out-hit Northwood 10-3 in the game. The Timberwolves did have numerous chances in the contest, leaving two runners on base four times while stranding 10 baserunners overall

Logan Meadors (Oxnard, Calif./Midland U.) allowed three earned runs in five innings of work in the game.

Northwood got the scoring going in the second inning of game two with a pair of runs. The two teams alternated scoring single runs over the fourth through the seventh innings, putting the Timberwolves up 4-2.  NU was one out away from clinching the win, but a two-out, two run single by SVSU sent the game to extra innings.

Once in extra innings, both teams had numerous chances to score before the Cardinals broke through in the 15th. SVSU scored three runs in the inning to earn the win. Northwood left five runners on base in extra innings, while the Cardinals stranded five prior to breaking through in the 15th.

SVSU out-hit Northwood 20-11 for the game. The Timberwolves left 13 runners on base while Saginaw Valley stranded 15.

Daniel Pulver (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had two hits and tossed five shutout innings in relief to lead Northwood. Grant Bridgewater (Bay City, Mich./Western) and Justin Zyvon (Sterling Heights, Mich./Macomb CC) each had a pair of hits for the Timberwolves.

Starter Sean Cunningham (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) allowed one run in five innings of work in a no-decision. 

Northwood will continue GLIAC play next Saturday (May 2). The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
