Baseball Drops 12-11 Contest To Ohio Dominican To Open GLIAC Tournament

XENIA, OHIO – The Northwood University baseball team dropped a wild 12-11 contest to Ohio Dominican to open the GLIAC Tournament Friday night (May 7).

Northwood, the No. 3 seed in the event, falls to 28-22 with the loss. Fourth-seeded Ohio Dominican improves to 30-16 with the win.

The game was back-and-forth from the start. The Timberwolves got on the board in the first inning, only to see the Panthers score five in the second to open up an early lead. The Timberwolves scored two in the third while ODU got a run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 6-3. After a weather delay in the fourth, Northwood came out and scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to go back on top 8-6. NU eventually led 9-6 heading to the seventh, but Ohio Dominican plated five runs in the inning to make the score 11-9. Trailing 12-9 heading to the bottom of the eight, the Timberwolves scored one in the eight and led the ninth off with a home run to cut the margin down to 12-11. But NU was unable to plate the tying run, giving the win to ODU.

For the game, the Timberwolves out-hit the Panthers 17-14. Ohio Dominican held a 4-2 edge in walks. Both teams left eight runners on base.

Leading the way for the Northwood offense was Travis Smith (Clare, Mich.). He went 4-5 with two doubles and four runs scored. Dylan Trimarchi (Pasadena, Calif./Glendale CC) had a double, a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. Grant Bridgewater (Bay City, Mich./Western) added three hits, a double and three RBIs. Dustin Lee (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had two hits and two RBIs, while Nick Barrientos (Zionsville, Ind./Danville Area CC) added two hits and two runs scored. Wayne Moak (Marysville, Mich.) also had a home run for the Timberwolves.

Northwood will take on Ashland Friday afternoon (May 8). That game will get under way at 2 p.m.
