Baseball Ranked In Pair Of Preseason Polls

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team was ranked in a pair of preseason polls Thursday (January 25).

The Timberwolves were ranked second in the Midwest Region according to the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason Poll. NU was also ranked No. 13 nationally in the Perfect Game preseason poll.

In the NCBWA poll, Northwood got three first-place votes and 81 points overall. Defending Midwest Region champion Quincy was picked first with 85 points and five first-place votes. In total, four GLIAC schools were picked in the top 10: NU, Grand Valley State (fourth), Wayne State (sixth) and Tiffin (tenth).

In addition, the NCBWA released their Preseason All-Region teams. Northwood placed four players on the First and Second Teams: senior pitcher Tyler Jandron and sophomore outfielder David Vinsky were named First Team while senior first baseman Ryan McClelland and senior pitcher Ian Dimitrie.

Northwood was the only team from the Midwest region ranked in the top-25 in the Perfect Game poll. The Timberwolves finished last season ranked 20th in their final poll of the year. Defending national champion West Chester is the No. 1 team in the rankings.

Northwood finished the 2017 season 46-13 overall, winning both the GLIAC and GLIAC Tournament Championships. The Timberwolves reached the regional final in their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
