Baseball Drops Pair At Kentucky Wesleyan

RECAP: Northwood baseball drops a pair of close games to close out a four-game set at Kentucky Wesleyan Sunday (March 24), as the Panthers earned 6-4 and 8-7 victories.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS (SEVEN INNINGS)

  • Northwood plated the opening run of the day in the top of the first on a Matt Magno RBI double to bring home Ben Clark.
  • The Panthers responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the first to tie the score.
  • Magno brought home a pair of unearned runs for Northwood in the top of the second on a double to put the Timberwolves on top 3-1.
  • Kentucky Wesleyan responded right away in the bottom of the second with a two-run single to tie the game back up at 3-3.
  • Northwood took the lead right back in the top of the third thanks to a Joey Johnston RBI single.
  • After the two teams scored in each of the first five half innings of the game, the score remained 4-3 until the bottom of the sixth when the Panthers took advantage of Northwood miscues. A leadoff walk and a pair of throwing errors keyed a three-run rally which featured just one hit. That put the Panthers on top 6-4.
  • Northwood put the tying run on base in the top of the seventh before coming up short.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS (NINE INNINGS)

  • KWC got on the board with a run in the top of the first to go up 1-0.
  • After the Panthers made it 2-0 in the second, Northwood plated a run in the top of the third in a Logan Voth RBI single.
  • The Panthers responded right away in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs to make the score 4-1.
  • Northwood got a pair back in the bottom of the sixth thanks to Salamon. His two-run opposite field home run got Northwood within one at 4-3.
  • Kentucky Wesleyan came right back with a run in the bottom of the sixth to get their advantage back to two at 5-3.
  • Voth keyed the Timberwolves getting one back in the top of the seventh, opening the inning with a double. He later scored after a pair of KWC wild pitches.
  • As they had throughout the game, Wesleyan came right back after the Timberwolves cut the lead to one in the seventh. A two-run homer by the Panthers made the score 7-4 heading to the eighth.
  • Northwood did not go away quietly, putting up a three-spot in the eighth. NU scored a pair on a Voth two-run single.
  • The score was 7-6 with the bases loaded and nobody out but Northwood was only able to plate one more run on a double play. That did tie the score for the first time since the first inning.
  • The Panthers took advantage of Northwood mistakes in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead back. KWC used a hit batter, a passed ball and a throwing error to go back on top 8-7.
  • The Timberwolves went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, giving KWC the doubleheader sweep.
