Football Falls To SVSU 28-20

The Northwood football team fell to 4-2 on the season with a 28-20 loss to No. 15 Saginaw Valley State Saturday afternoon (October 6).

NU falls to 3-2 in the GLIAC. SVSU improves 5-1 overall, 4-1 in the GLIAC.

Northwood trailed 7-0 late in the first quarter when junior kicker Alex Faust (Midland, Mich./Dow) got the Timberwolves on the board with a 24-yard field goal.

SVSU then led 14-3 and were driving when senior safety Joe Bitterman (Chesaning, Mich.) made a big play to get the Timberwolves right back into the game. He returned an interception 53 yards for a touchdown, making the score 14-10.

The Cardinals would score 14 of the next 17 points, however to go up 28-13. NU did make it a one possession game with 1:36 remaining on an Aaron Shaver (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) to Devonta Elzy (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) four-yard touchdown. NU attempted an onside kick following the TD, but was unable to recover.

Missed opportunities for the Timberwolves for the second straight week proved to be too much to overcome for Northwood. NU went 3-6 in scoring chances in the red zone. In all, NU got into SVSU territory four times without scoring.

For the game, SVSU finished with a 354-291 advantage in total yards. Both teams finished with 18 first downs in the game, while Northwood finished with a 34:57-25:03 edge in time of possession.

Cameron Jackson (Dahlonega, Ga./Lumpkin) finished the game with 107 yards rushing on 26 carries to lead the Northwood offense. Spencer Remtema (Rockford, Mich.) finished with a team-high eight tackles.

Northwood will travel to Michigan Tech next Saturday (October 13). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
