Football Drops 21-13 Contest To Northern Michigan

The Northwood football team dropped a 21-13 contest to Northern Michigan Saturday afternoon (October 27).

Northwood is now 4-5 overall, 3-5 in the GLIAC.  Northern Michigan stands at 3-6 overall, 2-6 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves got the scoring going early in the first quarter.  Carrington Thompson (Houston, Texas/Lamar) caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Mark Morris (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) to give Northwood a 6-0 lead.  That TD play capped a six-play, 65-yard drive that took up 3:02.

Northern Michigan took the momentum at that point, scoring 14 straight points to take a 14-6 lead to halftime.  NMU had a 246-111 advantage in total yards in the opening half and a 14-6 edge in first downs.

Northwood got back to within one possession in the third quarter.  Jordan Jonker (Hudsonville, Mich.) capped a nine-play, 61-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run.  It was Jonker's sixth rushing touchdown of the season and cut the NMU lead down to 14-13.

NMU responded immediately, countering Northwood's touchdown with a TD of their own on the following drive to extend their lead back to 21-13.  The Timberwolves had chances late to tie the game, but were unable to convert.  NU got the ball inside the Wildcat 30 twice, including to the eight on the final drive of the game, but were unable to find the end zone.

For the game, Northern Michigan finished with a 361-300 advantage in total yards. Northwood finished the game with 154 yards passing and 146 yards rushing.

Jonker finished with 80 yards rushing and a touchdown.  Morris added 146 yards passing and 53 yards rushing.  Spencer Remtema (Rockford, Mich.) led the way for the Northwood defense, registering 13 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception.

Northwood travels to Ferris State Saturday (November 3).  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
