Football Ends Season With 14-3 Loss To Hillsdale

The Northwood University football team saw its 2012 season come to an end with a 14-3 loss to Hillsdale Saturday afternoon (November 10).

The Timberwolves finish the season 5-6 overall, 4-6 in the GLIAC.  Hillsdale ends the season 7-4 overall, 7-3 in the GLIAC.

Hillsdale took the opening kickoff and marched down the field, going 75-yard in four minutes to go up 7-0.  But that touchdown would be lone points of the half, as the two defenses controlled play the rest of the way.  Northwood finished with 110 yards of offense in the half, compared to 141 for the Chargers.  Hillsdale managed just 66 yards of offense for the rest of the half following their opening drive.

Northwood got on the board in their opening drive of the second half.  The Timberwolves went 56 yards in 12 plays, which was capped by a Tony Hite (Valparaiso, Ind.) 35-yard field goal.

The Timberwolves then got all the way down to the Hillsdale 11 on their next drive, but Northwood's third missed field goal of the day gave NU nothing out of the drive.

The game remained 7-3 until the closing minutes of the contest, when the Chargers' Joe Glendening scored his second rushing touchdown of the day with 2:27 remaining to put the game away.

Overall, the final statistic proved to be tight.  Northwood finished with a 289-267 advantage in total offense and an 18-17 edge in first downs.  The Timberwolves finished the game with 197 yards passing and 92 yards rushing.  Hillsdale totaled 218 yards rushing and 49 yards passing.  Northwood's struggles in the red-zone were a key to the loss, as NU went 1-3 in the red-zone and 1-4 on field goal attempts for the game.

Mark Morris (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) threw for 197 yards to lead the Northwood offense.  Jordan Jonker (Hudsonville, Mich.) added 71 yards rushing, while Carrington Thompson (Houston, Texas/Lamar) had five catches for 47 yards.  Patrick Kelly (Fraser, Mich.) led the defensive effort with 12 tackles, while Spencer Remtema (Rockford, Mich.) and Ryan Whittum (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) ended their careers with 11 and nine tackles, respectively.
