Football Finishes Season With 24-7 Loss At Hillsdale

The Northwood University football team saw its 2013 season come to an end with a 24-7 loss at Hillsdale Saturday afternoon (November 16).

Northwood finishes the season 2-9 overall, 1-8 in the GLIAC.  Hillsdale ends up 5-6 overall, 5-4 in the GLIAC.

Hillsdale scored one touchdown in both the first and second quarters to take a 14-0 lead to halftime.  Northwood hung in there despite the Chargers controlling the play.  Hillsdale out-gained Northwood 243-85 overall and held a 16-2 advantage in first downs in the opening 30 minutes.

Northwood took advantage of a big play by their defense late in the third quarter to get back into the game.  Hillsdale had first and goal from the Northwood three when redshirt freshman defensive back Nick Tripp (Detroit, Mich./Crockett) intercepted a pass for the Timberwolves.  Tripp returned the pick 80 yards, putting Northwood at the Hillsdale 19.  Two plays later, redshirt freshman quarterback Mitch Robinson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) found junior Dan Richmond (Hartland, Mich.) for a 24-yard touchdown.  That score sent the game to the fourth quarter with the Timberwolves trailing just 14-7.

It was all Hillsdale, however, in the fourth quarter.  The Chargers scored 10 points while holding Northwood off the board to earn the win.

For the game, Hillsdale finisehd with a 475-181 advantage in total yards and a 33-7 edge in first downs.  The Chargers also finished with a 43:53-16:07 edge in time of possession.

Devonta Elzy (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) led the Northwood offense with 87 yards receiving.  Robinson ended up with 150 yards passing and a TD. Patrick Kelly (Fraser, Mich.) led the Northwood defense with 15 tackles.
