Football Falls To No. 22 Michigan Tech 21-6

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University football team dropped a 21-6 contest to No. 22 Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon (October 11).

The Huskies are now 5-0 overall and in the GLIAC. Northwood falls to 3-3 overall, 2-3 in the GLIAC.

MTU got on the board late in the first quarter, capping a 69-yard, 13-play drive with a one yard run to go up 7-0. The Huskies extended their lead to 14-0 late in the second, but Northwood responded with their first scoring drive of the day. The Timberwolves went 38 yards in nine plays, which resulted in a Keegan Haggarty 23-yard field goal to send the game to the break with MTU leading 14-3. The Huskies out-gained Northwood 169-78 in the opening half and held the ball for nearly 20 minutes.

Michigan Tech extended their lead midway through the third quarter on a touchdown, making the score 21-3. Northwood came back with their longest scoring drive of the day, going 74 yards to set up a 24 yard Haggarty field goal to send the game to the fourth with MTU on top 21-6.

Northwood had a couple of good drives in the fourth quarter end deep in Michigan Tech territory. The Timberwolves got to the Huskies 14 yard line early in the quarter, but failed on a fourth and one attempt to give the ball back to MTU. Later, Northwood reached the Michigan Tech 25 yard line but had a pass intercepted in the end zone.

For the game, Michigan Tech finished with a 323-272 advantage in total yards. MTU had 174 yards rushing and 149 yards passing, while Northwood finished with 153 yards passing and 118 yards rushing. MTU held the ball for 38:20, compared to 21:40 for the Timberwolves.

Mitch Robinson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) had 41 yards rushing and 154 yards passing to lead the Northwood offense. Michael Fisher (Rochester, Mich./Adams) had 15 tackles on defense, while Mike Keith (Roseville, Mich./Warren De La Salle) added 13 stops. Aryn Curtis (Detroit, Mich./West Bloomfield) had two interceptions for the Northwood defense, the first two interceptions the Huskies have thrown all year.

Northwood will host Findlay Saturday (October 18). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
