RECAP: Twelfth-ranked Grand Valley State uses a big third quarter en route to a 49-0 win over Northwood Saturday night (September 23).
INSIDE THE GAME
- Northwood moved the ball on their opening possession of the game, going 48 yards on five plays. But a fumble at the GVSU 19 ended the drive, giving the ball to the Lakers. Grand Valley State then took the ball and scored a touchdown, going up 7-0 with 9:35 remaining in the first quarter
- NU moved the ball again on their second drive, but a good punt by Scott McCormick pinned the Lakers at their own three. Grand Valley put together a 97-yard drive, however, to go up 14-0 early in the second quarter.
- The Lakers appeared ready to extend their lead on their next possession before the Northwood defense made a play. GVSU had the ball inside the NU 10, but Northwood's Travis Wiltjer forced a fumble which was recovered by Charles Proctor to give the ball back to Northwood.
- The score would remain 14-0 the remainder of the half. GVSU held a 257-138 edge in total yards in the first half, while Northwood had a 16:11-13:49 edge in time of possession. Both teams ran 33 offensive plays in the half.
- The Lakers got the kickoff to start the second half and took advantage. GVSU went 74 yards in five plays, capped by a touchdown to make the score 21-0 with 12:23 remaining in the third.
- GVSU then put the game away later in the third, scoring three more touchdown before the end of the quarter. That made the score 42-0 heading to the fourth.
- Grand Valley State scores one final touchdown late in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.
