MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood/Saginaw Valley football game has been selected as an NCAA Division II Showcase game, the NCAA announced Friday afternoon (August 24).

The contest, which is the 44th annual "Axe Bowl," will take place November 3 at 1 p.m. and will be exclusively broadcast online on ESPN3 through WatchESPN and the ESPN App.

Northwood was awarded this game thanks to winning the 2018 NCAA Division II Award of Excellence. NU received the award because of their community engagement involved with the annual "Go M.A.D." Day. The event was created to honor the legacy of Northwood's late football coach/athletic director Pat Riepma, whose mantra of "Go Make A Difference" is something that continues to be a big part of the NU athletic department to this day.

"Having this game be awarded to us thanks to Go M.A.D. day is a great opportunity for Northwood University," said Athletic Director Dave Marsh. "It is especially fitting to have the game be the Axe Bowl for an event honoring Pat Riepma. To be able to showcase our University to a national audience during our rivalry game against SVSU is something we are really looking forward to."

Northwood will open its 2018 season at Tiffin September 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
