Football Places Eight On All-GLIAC Teams
MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University football team had eight players earn All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) honors, the league announced Tuesday (November 13).
Senior wide receiver Gary Landless and sophomore offensive lineman Damon Sutton were named Second Team All-GLIAC. NU had six players earn Honorable Mention recognition: junior defensive back Dimitri Abro, junior offensive lineman Chris Jacobs, junior defensive back Mykhael Sanford-McCarver, junior wide receiver Alex Spicuzzi, redshirt freshman defensive back Keenan Williamson and junior linebacker Travis Wiltjer.
Landless posted a breakthrough senior season, ending the year with 565 yards receiving and four touchdowns. He ended the year averaging 26.9 yards per reception, which currently leads all of Division II. Landless ended the season ranked seventh in the GLIAC in receiving yards per game – every player ranked ahead of him in that category had at least 10 more receptions than Landless.
Sutton made 10 starts at left tackle for the Timberwolves this season. He was Northwood's top performer up front for an offense that rushed for at least 172 yards five times.
Abro led the Northwood defense in a number of categories, including tackles (69), pass breakups (seven) while sharing team-high honors in sacks (2.5) and forced fumbles (two). Abro had at least nine tackles four times and finished the season with an outstanding game against Michigan Tech, finishing with 10 tackles and two sacks.
Jacobs earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors for the second straight season. He has been a three-year starter for the Timberwolves, this year at right tackle. In his career, Jacobs has played in 31 out of a possible 32 games up front for Northwood.
Sanford-McCarver started at strong safety nine times this season. He finished the year ranked third on the team in tackles (53) while sharing the team lead in forced fumbles (two). Sanford-McCarver also added a fumble recovery and an interception.
Spicuzzi was a key part of both the Northwood offense and special teams this season. He finished the year ranked second on the team in receptions (16) and receiving yards (286) while averaging 25.3 yards per kick return. Spicuzzi had 20 plays this season that went at least 20 yards, seven more than any other player on the team.
Williamson became a force for Northwood at cornerback over the final five games of the season. After getting his first career start against Northern Michigan, Williamson had 16 tackles, five pass breakups and two interceptions. He earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his effort against NMU, finishing with four tackles and a pair of interceptions.
Wiltjer led Northwood in tackles per game, registering 62 tackles in eight games (7.8 per game). He also added 6.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Wiltjer had at least four tackles in all eight games he played and had more than eight tackles three times.
