Max Gonos, Mahlon Slaughter and Mbaimba Tunkara Named All-Great Midwest

2022 All-Great Midwest Teams

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University football team placed a total of three players on the All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) team, the league announced Friday (November 18).

Sophomore kicker Max Gonos earned Second Team honors. Senior Mahlon Slaughter and sophomore Mbaimba Tunkara each were placed on the Third Team as linebackers.

Gonos led Northwood in scoring this season, finishing with 61 points. He went 11-15 on field goals and 28-30 on extra points for the Timberwolves. Gonos became the first NU athlete to earn G-MAC Athlete of the Week honors in school history for his efforts against Kentucky Wesleyan in week one, going 2-2 on field goals and 7-7 on extra points. He also went 4-4 on field goal attempts at Lake Erie October 22.

Slaughter ended the year with 65 tackles (40 solo), 11.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He had a pair of defensive touchdowns for Northwood – a 10-yard fumble return for a TD against Findlay and a 76-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Walsh. Slaughter had at least seven tackles in seven games this season.

Tunkara registered 62 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and an interception for the Timberwolves. Like Slaughter, Tunkara had a pair of defensive touchdowns this season – a 20-yard fumble return against Findlay and a 35-yard interception return against Ohio Dominican. His best game this season came at Findlay, when he finished with 12 tackles, a sack, four tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a touchdown.
