
Football Places Seven On All-Great Midwest Team - Gavin Myers Named G-MAC Freshman of the Year
MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University football team earned recognition from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Thursday (November 21), as the league announced the All-Conference honorees.
Punter Gavin Myers was named the G-MAC Freshman of the Year as well as Second Team All-Great Midwest. Senior linebacker Mbaimba Tunkara and senior wide receiver Brendan Teal were named First Team All-Conference. The Timberwolves were represented on the Second Team by Myers, senior defensive end Brandon Ross, senior defensive tackle Duwayne Legette, sophomore return specialist Brandon Martin and senior defensive end Brock Cook.
Myers ranked third in the G-MAC in punting at 42.9 per kick. He led the conference with punts inside the 20 (18) and ranked second in punts over 50 yards (11). Myers is the first Northwood football player to take home an individual post-season award from the G-MAC.
Tunkara had 65 tackles this season to go with 11.0 tackles for loss and a pair of pass breakups. Tunkara has earned All-Great Midwest honors in each of the last two seasons, as he was named to the Second Team a year ago.
Teal had a breakthrough senior season, finishing with 881 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns. He shares the G-MAC lead in touchdowns while ranking second in the conference in yards. His yardage total is the most for a Northwood receiver since 2000 while is touchdown mark is the highest for an NU receiver since 2007.
Ross finished his senior season with 24 tackles, three sacks and six tackles for loss. Over the last two years, Ross had 68 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss.
Legette was an anchor in the middle of the Northwood defense. He had 33 tackles, two sacks and nine tackles for loss at the defensive tackle position.
Prior to an injury, Martin was a dominant force in the return game. He averaged 31.7 yards per kick return, good for second in the G-MAC. Martin's long return of the season was 73 yards.
Cook ended his final season at Northwood with 57 tackles, six sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss. He tied for the G-MAC lead in total tackles for loss while is 12 solo tackles for loss were the most in the league. Cook finished the season ranking sixth in the G-MAC in sacks.
Northwood finished the year 6-5 overall, 4-5 in the G-MAC. NU finished with an overall winning record for the first time since 2017.
