Bio

Gavin McMacken is entering his 10th season at Northwood. The 2020 season will be his second serving as defensive coordinator.

His work with the defensive line over the years has turned the unit into a strength of the team. McMacken worked closely with Charles Williams, who has recently signed a contract with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League.

McMacken came to Northwood from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.  During his eight years at Loras, he served as Defensive Line coach and spent the 2008-2011 seasons as Defensive Coordinator.  While at Loras, McMacken coached 16 All-Conference selections and All-American and Gagliardi Trophy Finalist, Ross Dillavou.  In 2008, McMacken’s defense set the school record for fewest rushing yards allowed in a season.

McMacken began his coaching career at his alma mater, Alma College, where he coached the defensive line and worked with the strength and conditioning program.  During his four years at Alma, McMacken coached nine all-conference selections and two All-Americans including career sack record holder, Justin Harris.

McMacken was a three year letter winner at Alma College.  He graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.  In 2006, McMacken completed his Master of Arts degree in Athletics Administration from Loras College.

McMacken resides in Midland with his wife, Lindsey and their son Gideon.
