Men's Basketball Downs Northern Michigan 81-48

The Northwood University men's basketball team earned an 81-48 win over Northern Michigan University Saturday afternoon (January 26).

The Timberwolves improved to 7-11 overall, 6-8 in the GLIAC.  NMU falls to 4-14 overall, 3-11 in the GLIAC.

With the win, Northwood head coach Jeff Rekeweg claimed his 300th career victory.  He won 265 games at St. Francis prior to his arrival at Northwood for the 2010-11 season.

Northwood took control of the game right away, scoring 12 of the first 15 points in the opening four minutes.  The Timberwolves eventually took a 41-24 lead to halftime, which was their biggest advantage in the half.  Northwood shot 48.1 percent from the floor (13-27) compared to NMU at 47.1 percent (8-17).  The Timberwolves had six fewer turnovers (5-11) and had three more offensive rebounds (6-3) in the opening 20 minutes.

NU scored the opening seven points of the second half and never looked back.  The Wildcats got no closer than 18 the rest of the way

For the game, Northwood finished at 50.0 percent (27-54) overall and 45.5 percent (10-22) from behind the arc.  Northern Michigan finished at 43.6 percent (17-39) overall and 33.3 percent (4-12) from behind the arc.  NU finished with big advantages in all of the specialty stats: points in the paint (32-16), points off turnovers (21-6), second chance points (12-3), fast break points (10-2) and bench points (29-7).

The Timberwolves had three players finish in double figures. Wes Wilcox (Roselle, Ill./Harper CC) led the way for the Timberwolves with a career-high 29 points.  He was 11-15 from the floor and 3-5 from 3-point range. Wilcox also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Booker Stoudmire (Ypsilanti, Mich./Belleville) added 14 points, while Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./South Lake) finished with 11 points.

Northwood will travel to Saginaw Valley State University Saturday night (February 2).  Game time is set for 5 p.m.
