Men's Basketball Tops Winona State 59-58

The Northwood University men's basketball team claimed a dramatic 59-58 road win over Winona State Sunday afternoon (November 24)
Northwood improves to 3-2 with the win. Winona State falls to 4-2 with the loss.

The two teams exchanged runs in the opening half. The Timberwolves got off to an early lead after netting the first five points of the game. Winona State scored the next six to take the lead, only to later see Northwood go on a 10-0 run to go up 17-11. The Timberwolves eventually took a 27-26 lead to halftime. Both offenses struggled in the half - Winona State shot 11-29 overall (37.9 percent), compared to Northwood at 10-34 (29.4 percent).

In the second half, the contest remained extremely close - neither team claimed more than a five point lead in the closing period. A layup and foul for a three-point play put the Warriors up 58-55 at 0:39. That's when sophomore Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) took over. He converted a layup to cut the lead to one.  Winona then missed a pair of free throws, giving the ball back to Northwood. Langkabel was fouled and sent to the free throw line with eleven seconds on the clock. After knocking down two free throws, the Timberwolves forced a missed three-pointer to claim the 59-58 victory.

For the game, Northwood finished at 20-60 from the floor (33.3 percent). Winona State shot 39.3 percent, making 22-56 attempts, including just 6.2 percent (1-16) from beyond the arc.

Langkabel led all scorers, finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds. Wes Wilcox (Roselle, Ill./Harper) recorded 11 points to go along with eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Northwood will host Dayspring Bible College Tuesday night (December 2). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
