Men's Basketball Defeats Wayne State 77-64

The Northwood University men's basketball team defeated Wayne State 77-64 Thursday evening (January 16).

Northwood improves to 10-7 overall, 6-3 in the GLIAC. The Warriors fall to 6-6 overall, 4-5 in the GLIAC.

Due to poor road conditions and inclement weather, Wayne State arrived at the Bennett Center nearly an hour after the scheduled start time. Tip off was delayed until 9:20 p.m.

The majority of the first half was close, featuring six lead changes. Northwood finished the half on a 9-2 run to enter halftime with a 34-27 lead. NU held an advantage in shooting, finishing at 48 percent (12-25) compared to Wayne State's 33.3 percent (9-27). Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich. / South Lake) shot 6-8 from the floor for 14 points in the opening period.

The Timberwolves continued to play well, extending the lead 38-27 less than two minutes into the second half. Wayne State cut the margin to eight at 13:43 (45-37) but the Warriors would not get any closer the rest of the way. NU led by as many 16 in the closing period.

For the game, Northwood shot 60.9 percent from the floor, making 28-46 attempts. NU finished 6-15 from 3-point range (40.0 percent) and 15 of 18 from the foul line (83.3 percent). The Timberwolves held Wayne State to 37.5 percent (21-56) overall, 28.6 percent from 3-point range (4-14) and 69.2 percent from the foul line (18-26).

Bowles finished with a career high 29 points and 11 rebounds with six blocks. Wes Wilcox (Roselle, Ill./Harper) added 20 points, six rebounds and four assists. Tony Johnson (Midland, Mich. / Midland) finished with a career high seven assists to go with three rebounds and two steals.

Northwood will travel to No. 17 Lake Superior Saturday (January 18). Game time is set for 3 p.m.
