Men's Basketball Earns Dramatic 73-72 Win At Kentucky Wesleyan

OWENSBORO, KY. – The Northwood University men's basketball team earned a dramatic 73-72 road win over Kentucky Wesleyan Wednesday night (November 19).

Both teams are now 2-1 on the season following the non-conference contest.

Northwood got off to a strong start in the opening half, opening up a 10 point lead on three separate occasions in the first half. A layup in the final seconds of the half gave the Timberwolves a 42-33 lead at the break. NU earned the lead thanks to excellent shooting in the half, connecting on 73.9 percent from the floor (17-23) and 75.0 percent from 3-point range (6-8).

NU got the lead up to 12 early in the second half, but the Panthers chipped away at the lead. KWC went back on top for the first time since the early stages of the game at 62-61 with 5:49 remaining.

The final moments of the game proved to be a free throw shooting contest, as the final 11 points of the game were scored at the foul line. Kentucky Wesleyan connected on a pair of foul shots with 29 seconds remaining to tie the game at 72-72. Then with one second remaining, Northwood point guard Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill/USC) got fouled shooting a 3-pointer. Jones missed his first two free throws, but connected on his final attempt to give Northwood the win.

Shooting proved to be key to the Northwood win, as the Timberwolves finished the game shooting 62.5 percent from the floor (25-40). NU also went 10-18 from 3-point range (55.6 percent) and 13-19 from the foul line (68.4 percent). Kentucky Wesleyan finished the game at 47.1 percent overall (24-51), 40.0 percent from 3-point range (6-15) and 81.8 percent from the foul line (18-22).The two teams combined for just 44 rebounds in the game (NU 23, KW 21).

Four Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.). He scored 16 points, going 4-5 from the floor, 2-2 from 3-point range and 6-7 from the foul line. Jermaine Myers (Ajax, Ontario/Fordham U.) had 15 points, while Jones finished with 13 points and six assists. Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./South Lake) scored 12 points on 6-7 shooting while grabbing a game-high six rebounds.

Northwood will host Finlandia November 29. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
