Men's Basketball Earns 87-83 Win Over Walsh

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team earned an 87-83 win over Walsh Thursday night (December 11).

The win is the first for the Timberwolves in GLIAC play. NU improves to 4-3 overall, 1-2 in the GLIAC. Walsh falls to 5-2 overall, 1-2 in the GLIAC.

Walsh came out on fire early on, connecting on seven of their first 10 3-point attempts to open the game. The Cavaliers led by as many as 13 points in the opening 8:30 minutes before the Timberwolves began to come back. Northwood eventually came all the way back to take a 39-38 lead before Walsh took a 41-39 lead at halftime. Both teams shot well in the opening half – Walsh finished at 55.6 percent (15-27) from the floor while Northwood ended up at 57.1 percent (16-28). The Cavaliers made seven 3-pointers compared to three for the Timberwolves to give Walsh the advantage at halftime.

Northwood's offense got even better after halftime, leading the Timberwolves to the win. NU went on top for good at 49-48 with 15:04 remaining in the game. Northwood led 64-62 with just under eight minutes remaining when NU went on a key run. The Timberwolves scored eight straight points to make the score 74-64. Walsh rallied late to cut the margin down to three with under 10 seconds remaining but NU finished the game out to earn the win.

For the game, Northwood shot 62.1 percent from the floor (36-58) thanks to making 66.7 percent in the second half (20-30). Walsh ended the game at 50.9 percent (29-57) while connecting on 12 3-pointers. NU won the game with their play inside – Northwood finished with a 50-32 edge in points in the paint.

Three Timberwolves finished in double figures for the game, led by Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./Southlake). He had 26 points and 11 rebounds while going 11-13 from the floor. Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) had 18 points, while Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill/USC) had 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Northwood will host Malone Saturday night (December 13). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
