Men's Basketball Defeats Malone 62-56

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team posted a 62-56 win over Malone Saturday afternoon (December 13).

Northwood is now 5-3 overall, 2-2 in the GLIAC. Malone falls to 3-5 overall, 1-3 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves took the lead for good at 6-5 with 17:16 remaining in the first half. Northwood's 30-17 lead at halftime was their biggest of the opening half. Neither team shot well in the opening 20 minutes – NU finished at 32.1 percent (9-28) while Malone connected on 28.6 percent (8-28). Northwood finished with a 26-14 edge in rebounding in the first half as well.

NU jumped out fast in the second half, extending their lead to 35-17 less than two minutes in. The lead remained above 10 points until there were less than six minutes remaining in the contest.  Malone got back into the game with a run around that point, using a 15-3 run to cut the Northwood lead down to 51-49 with just over two minutes remaining.  NU used strong free throw shooting to close out the win, going 7-8 in the final 1:08 to close out the win.

For the game, Northwood finished at 35.3 percent from the floor (18-51). Malone ended up at 36.5 percent (23-63). The Timberwolves won the game at the foul line, where NU finished 23-28 overall (82.1 percent) compared to Malone at 5-8 (62.5 percent).

Four Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill/USC). He finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Khalid King (Columbus, Ohio/North Carolina A&T) came off the bench to score 11, while Tony Johnson (Midland, Mich.) and Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) each added 10. Casey Boyle (Grayslake, Ill./Grayslake Central) led Northwood with 10 rebounds.

Northwood will travel to Lewis Wednesday (December 17). Game time is set for 8 p.m. Eastern time.
