Men's Basketball Defeats Grand Valley State 78-70

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team earned a 78-70 win over Grand Valley State Saturday night (January 24).

Northwood, which is now 8-0 at home this season, improves to 11-7 overall, 7-5 in the GLIAC. GVSU falls to 9-9 overall, 5-7 in the GLIAC.

The Lakers scored the first two points of the game but that would prove to be their lone lead of the game. Northwood went on a 23-7 run after GVSU's opening bucket to lead by 14 at the first media timeout. Grand Valley State chipped away at the lead, eventually cutting the margin down to 32-27 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. But the Timberwolves finished the half with another run, scoring the next nine points to go back up by 14. NU led 41-30 at the break, thanks to shooting 53.1 percent from the floor (17-32). GVSU finished the opening half at 34.6 percent (9-26).

The lead for Northwood the second half remained consistent throughout, with the Timberwolves never leading by less than six or more than 16. Over the final 10:08 of the game, the lead for Northwood was between eight and 12 points the entire time.

For the game, Northwood finished at 51.6 percent from the floor (32-62) while GVSU ended up at 40.4 percent (21-52). Northwood made five more 3-pointers than the Lakers (9-4), while GVSU held a 24-5 edge in points from the foul line.  The Timberwolves ended up with seven dunks in the game to zero for Grand Valley State.

Three Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) with 19 points. He connected on five 3-pointers in the game. Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./USC) finished up with 18 points, six assists, four steals and four rebounds. Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./South Lake) scored 17 points on 7-9 shooting.

Northwood will travel to Michigan Tech Thursday night (January 29). Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
