Men's Basketball Falls At Michigan Tech 65-54

HOUGHTON, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a 65-54 contest at Michigan Tech Thursday night (January 29).

Northwood falls to 11-8 overall, 7-6 in the GLIAC. Michigan Tech improves to 13-4 overall, 10-3 in the GLIAC.

The first half proved to be a defensive battle, as both teams struggled on the offensive end. The Timberwolves trailed 21-17 with two minutes to go in the half, but MTU scored the final six points of the half to take a 27-17 lead at the break. Northwood finished the opening half shooting 26.7 percent from the floor (8-30) while Michigan Tech ended up at 36.0 percent (9-25). The 3-point line was a big part of the half, as MTU made five triples to one for Northwood.

Michigan Tech extended their lead in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, out-scoring Northwood 22-13 to make the score 49-30. MTU eventually led by 20, but NU fought back in the final minutes of the game.  The Timberwolves scored eight points in 41 seconds to cut the lead down to 62-54 with just over a minute to go.  But Northwood did not score the rest of the way, giving the win to Michigan Tech.

For the game, the Timberwolves finished at 31.0 percent from the floor (18-58) compared to Michigan Tech at 50.0 percent (23-46). The 3-point line was a big key to the win for the Huskies, as MTU finished 10-21 (47.6 percent) while NU ended up just 2-19 (10.5 percent).  Northwood was out-rebounded 39-30 but finished with eight fewer turnovers then Michigan Tec h (16-8).

Three Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Jermaine Myers (Ajax, Ont./Fordham U.) and Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./USC) with 12 points each. Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./South Lake) ended up with 11 points.

Northwood will travel to Northern Michigan Saturday (January 31). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
