Men's Basketball Loses At Lake Superior State 76-72

SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 76-72 contest at Lake Superior State Monday night (February 2).

Northwood falls to 11-10 overall, 7-8 in the GLIAC. Lake Superior State, winners of six straight, improves to 18-3 overall, 13-2 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves led early, but the Lakers got hot from beyond the arc to open up a lead. LSSU made five 3-pointers in six attempts in just over three minutes, putting them on top 25-14. NU chipped away at the lead the remained of the half, eventually going to the locker room trailing 34-31. The team shot similar percentages in the half – NU ended up at 37.0 percent (10-27) while LSSU shot 35.3 percent (12-34). The Lakers made eight 3-pointers to one for the Timberwolves, while Northwood made 10 free throws to two for Lake Superior State.

The second half was close throughout – neither team led by more than five points until the final three minutes. Northwood held a pair of one point leads in the second half, but LSSU finished the game strong at the foul line. The Lakers went 18-19 from the foul line for the game – 16-17 in the second half alone. Northwood fought back in the final minute, making it a one possession game three times, only to see LSSU go 10-10 from the foul line to close out the win.

For the game, Northwood shot 40.7 percent from the floor (22-54) while Lake Superior State finished at 41.4 percent (24-58). LSSU out-scored Northwood 30-12 from 3-point range, while Northwood held a 24-18 advantage from the foul line. LSSU out-rebounded Northwood 40-30 for the game. NU finished with just five turnovers overall.

Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) and Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./South Lake) led all scorers in the game with 22 points. Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./USC) finished with 16 points.

Northwood will travel to Hillsdale Thursday night (February 5). Game time is set for 8 p.m.
