Men's Basketball Earns 79-66 Win Over Ferris State

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team picked up an important 79-66 win over Ferris State Thursday night (February 12).

Northwood improves to 13-11 overall, 9-9 in the GLIAC. Ferris State falls to 18-6 overall, 14-4 in the GLIAC. NU moves into a tie for seventh place in the GLIAC with the win.

The Timberwolves were the better team for the majority of the opening half, opening up a 33-23 advantage with 3:35 remaining. FSU fought back with a run, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to make the score 35-34. NU scored the final basket of the half to put the Timberwolves lead at 37-34 at the break. Northwood shot 50.0 percent from the floor (15-30) and 85.7 percent (6-7) from the foul line in the half. FSU ended up at 43.3 percent (13-30) from the floor and 2-4 from the foul line, but the Bulldogs went 6-12 from 3-point range to stay close.

Ferris State got off to a strong start in the second half scoring the first five points to go up 39-37. But the Bulldogs would go on to lead just one more time the rest of the way (50-49), as the Timberwolves took control in the final minutes of the game. The score was tied 52-52 with 11:04 remaining when Northwood went on an 18-6 run in just under six minutes remaining. FSU got no closer than 10 the rest of the way. The Timberwolves shot 58.3 percent from the floor in the second half (14-24), which included a 55.6 percent mark from 3-point range (5-9). Meanwhile, Northwood held the Bulldogs to 34.4 percent in the second half (11-32) from the floor and just 7.1 percent from 3-point range (1-14).

For the game, Northwood shot 53.7 percent overall, going 29-54 from the floor. The Timberwolves finished at 46.2 percent from 3-point range (6-13). Ferris State ended up at 38.7 percent from the floor (24-62) and 26.9 percent from 3-point range. The foul line proved to be a big key to the game – while Northwood shot 68.2 percent from the line (15-22), Ferris State made just 11 of 24 attempts (45.8 percent).

Four Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) with 20. He also added six rebounds. Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./USC) added 17 points, seven assists and two steals. Jermaine Myers (Ajax, Ont./Fordham U.) finished with 13 points, four assists and two steals, while Will Bowles (East Detroit, Mich./South Lake) ended up with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Northwood will travel to Grand Valley State Saturday night (February 14). Game time is set for 8 p.m.
