Men's Basketball Falls At No. 22 Lake Superior State 78-65 In GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals

SAULT STE MARIE, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team ended its 2014-15 season with a 78-65 loss at No. 22 Lake Superior State Wednesday night (March 4) in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals.

Northwood ends the year 15-14 overall and 11-11 in the GLIAC. LSSU advances in the Tournament as the No. 1 seed with a 24-5 record.

The first half saw five ties until there was 9:24 on the clock. After being tied at 21-21, Lake Superior State went on a 7-0 run followed by NU going on a 7-0 run of their own for the sixth tie game. LSSU finished the half with a 8-5 run for a 36-33 lead at halftime. NU shot 45.8 percent in the opening half compared to 42.4 percent for the Lakers. Northwood was 9-12 from the free throw line as well.

Lake Superior State scored the first five points of the second half before the Timberwolves closed the lead to just two with 15:07 to go in the game. The Lakers were the better team on the offense and defensive end of the floor in the second half. After leading by as many as 15 points in the second half, LSSU closed out the game with a 78-65 win. NU was unable to connect on a single three pointer in the second half (0-9) and shot just six free throws (4-6). The Timberwolves shot 35.9 percent from the floor in the closing period while the Lakers shot 56.0 percent.

For the game, NU shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the floor and just 11.8 percent (2-17) from beyond the arc. The Timberwolves were out-rebounded 38-36. Lake Superior State finished shooting 48.3 percent (28-58) from the floor.

Two Timberwolves finished in double figures led by junior Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill / USC) with 16 points and seven assists. Senior Will Bowles grabbed 16 rebounds and scored 15 points in his final career game for Northwood. Tony Johnson (Midland, Mich.) registered two points, two rebounds and two assists in his final career game.
