Men's Basketball Claims 79-76 Win Over Tiffin

TIFFIN, OHIO – The Northwood University men's basketball team earned a 79-76 road victory over Tiffin Thursday night (January 7).

Northwood improves to 9-4 overall, 5-2 in the GLIAC. Tiffin falls to 6-8 overall, 2-5 in the GLIAC.

The Timberwolves came out strong, opening up a 31-18 lead with less than eight minutes remaining in the first half. Tiffin dominated the rest of the opening half, out-scoring Northwood 19-4 to take a 37-35 lead to the locker room. Northwood finished at 38.9 percent (14-36) from the floor, while Tiffin ended up at 44.8 percent (13-29). The Timberwolves made four more 3-pointers in the half (5-1), but the Dragons made eight more free throws (10-2).

The second half was tight – there were six ties and five lead changes in the final 20 minutes.  The largest lead for either team in the half was six points. Northwood trailed 73-69 with 2:46 remaining in the game when the Timberwolves scored seven straight points to go back on top 76-73. Tiffin had the ball trailing 79-76 with three seconds remaining but were unable to get off an attempt to tie the game. Both teams shot it well in the second half – Tiffin finished at 63.0 percent (17-27) while Northwood ended up at 60.0 percent (18-30).

For the game, Northwood finished at 48.5 percent from the floor overall (32-66). The Timberwolves went 10-26 from 3-point range (38.5 percent) and 5-11 from the foul line (45.5 percent). Tiffin finished at 53.6 percent overall (30-56), 14.3 percent from 3-point range (2-14) and 66.7 percent from the foul line (14-21). The NU bench came up big in the game, out-scoring the Tiffin bench 32-4.

Four Timberwolves finished in double figures, led by Dylan Langkabel (Morristown, Ind.) with 17. He also added six rebounds. Maurice Jones (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) finished with 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Zach Allread (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Nick Spitzley (Pewamo, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia) added 14 and 10, respectively.

Northwood travels to Ohio Dominican Saturday (January 9). Game time is set for 3 p.m.
