Men's Basketball Names Postseason Award Winners
MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University men's basketball team has announced their award winners from the 2020-21 season.
The Most Improved Player award was claimed by junior forward Jean Pierre Frederick. He started all 18 games for the Timberwolves this season, averaging 5.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while 50.6 percent from the floor. He finished second on the team in field goal percentage and third in rebounds per game.
"This award really represents a big part of our program as player development is a cornerstone of what we do and value," said Head Coach Lonnie Griffin, who just completed his first season as head coach. "JP is just scratching the surface of his abilities."
Junior guard Trevor Davis took home a pair of honors, earning the "D-Wolf" as well as the "S.T.A.U.P" awards. The D-Wolf award is given to the team's best defender based on key statistics that leads to stops.
"The D-Wolf award is very significant in our program," said Griffin. "Trevor's intensity and his desire to be great is unmatched."
S.T.A.U.P are the core values of the Northwood men's basketball team. It stands for Sacrifice, Toughness, Accountability, Unity, and Passion.
"This award is our most valued, it is what our program is built on," said Griffin. "Trevor is a player who exemplifies each one of our core values every day."
Junior guard Jack Ammerman also took home a pair of awards – Most Valuable Player as well as the GPA Award. He earned Second Team All-GLIAC honor this season after leading Northwood in scoring at 16.3 points per game. Ammerman also ranked fourth in the GLIAC in 3-point field goal percentage at 44.2 percent. He also sports the highest individual GPA on the team, currently standing at 3.596 while majoring in Management.
"Jack has become one of the most dangerous players in the conference with or without the ball in his hands," said Griffin. He is a talented player but remains humble and credits his teammates with pushing and motivating him."
The Timberwolves went 6-12 this season. NU returns nine of its top 11 players for the 2021-22 campaign.
