Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 In Double Overtime

The Northwood University men's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 overtime contest at Ashland Friday afternoon (September 21).

The loss was the first of the season for Northwood, who falls to 3-1-1 overall, 3-1 in the GLIAC. Ashland now stands at 4-1-1 overall, 3-1 in the GLIAC.

Northwood got off to a good start in the match, netting the first goal of the contest in the fifth minute. Freshman Sam Nair (London, England/Nower Hill) got a ball on a breakaway off a feed from Jack Smith (Lancaster, England) and beat the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Ashland responded with a goal in the 31st minutes to send the game to the locker room with the score tied at 1-1. Northwood outshot Ashland 6-4 in the first half while the Timberwolves held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Neither team would score again until the closing moments of the contest. With 2:03 remaining in double overtime, the Eagles put home a cross to earn the win.

For the match, Ashland finished with 14-12 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. NU keeper Johannes Sterobo (Odense, Denmark/Tornbjerg) made six saves in the loss.

Northwood will travel to Notre Dame (OH) Sunday (September 23). Match time is set for 2 p.m.
